Burning Yard
Steeply immersive field recording collage and mechanically-reclaimed steppers pressure from Kolkata via Copenhagen, by the lesser-spotted Trawl Hz on a super limited lathe-cut job.
Pitching one side of sweltering atmosphere form the streets of Burning Yard, with rotoring loops and noise, all cut to vinyl by “bladud flies”, the ‘Varanasi’ 10” is a rare example of work by a figure who has recorded with the BBC, Matthew Herbert and Plaid in their time, aside to running the “ultra-sporadic” District Six Records (home to early Metamatics and Anthony Manning). It’s a real one.
‘Burning Yard’ plunges us into febrile street scenes on the front, layering and cutting field recordings of fauna, human and mechanical sounds to give a palpable, if subtly impressionist, feel for the place. Recorded in a factory beside a crematorium on the Ganges where the dead were being burned on open pyres, sputtering mechanical rhythms gradually grind their teeth into a gnashing pattern, a swinging mutoid stepper littered with sonorous bells and buzzsaw interjections that raise the spirits of the dead.

Sonic Geography - New York
Sonic Geography is the third instalment in the ongoing series of Trawl Hz binaural narratives and global collaborations, following Gamma Shadows and Burning Yard.
Blending field recordings and contemporary sonic storytelling with dense electronics and cello, Sonic Geography is set against the trains, shipyards, and industrial edges of New York City.
Travelling through NYC’s rail lines and waterways, Trawl Hz gathered field recordings that were shaped into a loose narrative of sonic snapshots. From this material, Jensen and Trawl Hz created Sonic Geography – New York: a vivid, textural collision of sound rooted in modern classical practice and left-field sound-system culture.
