Trawl Hz's work involves the capturing of field recordings within environments that hold everyday or exceptional sonic qualities. Forging raw with processed recordings, he produces real and imagined sound universes, together with aural docu-poems and dense electronic music. Binaural sound and multi-speaker arrays are utilised as conduits for these layered sonic narratives. Trawl Hz has received awards from The Danish Arts Council, Arts Council England, British Council, PRS Foundation For New Music, Koda Kultur, Nordisk Kulturfond and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
Rooted in sound system culture, Trawl Hz has woven electronic music and sound into his life since 1987.
A working DJ until the early 2000s, his ongoing passion for electronic music has kept him connected to the underground scene to this day. He has been a part of pioneering entities such as Mighty Force Records, which released the first two Aphex Twin 12s, and DJ'd alongside key figures in the London and European club scenes such as Fabio, Colin Faver, DJ Bone, Luke Slater, Jega and Cristian Vogel to name but a few.

I enjoy working with you as you are open, friendly, like humor very much like me. I also like working with you as I often shoot in Algiers, and you adapt yourself easily to the country and culture. Not everyone would enjoy it because of it's lack of comfort or tricky situation at time. You are independent and seems to always understand what I need or want. Then you get on with it. The sound you have recorded has always been used and is always well recorded.

Artists include Metamatics, Anthony Manning, William Rusere, Plaid, Deepart, Burnt Friedman, Gaby Kerpel, Afrikan Sciences, Demons and Goodiepal

This period was the catalyst for new directions as sound artist and location sound recordist for the moving image, radio and new media. Following his studies at the National Film & television School, Trawl Hz has gone on to build a portfolio that includes an array of location and post production assignments incorporating documentary, fiction, music, performance and gallery installations. Highlights include working as sound recordist and designer for BBC Radio Three and Four drama commissions, collaborating with Warp Records stalwarts Plaid, travelling across the Sahara and recording Tamasheq freedom fighters turned musicians, Tinariwen, and capturing sounds in the Black Mountains for John Cale.
I have collaborated with Ross on various films over the years and his contribution to my work was exceptional, his conceptual understanding, sensitive attention to details and his acute attentiveness to natural sounds enriched and transformed the pieces. Both on location and in the studio Ross was able to bring qualities that added depth and meaning to each of the pieces. His invaluable contribution allowed each of the pieces to reach its full potential and consequently to gain the international acclaim that they have received.
